Low Carb vs. Low Glycemic... What's the Diff?

DIABETES IS ON A 600% INCREASE IN THIS GENERATION!


As I mentioned in previous articles, carbohydrates are necessary and vital for energy metabolism.  While severely restricting carbohydrate intake can have ill effects on health, ingesting a large amount of them over a period of time can have detrimental effects on your health as well.

Too Much Carbs- High Glycemic…

 
The secret to having a consistent glucose and insulin level in your body is making sure you don't spike those levels by eating too much high-glycemic carbohydrates... especially alone (without a fat or protein source).  Stay away from pastas, potatoes and sugary foods. Not only do they spike insulin, making your body more resistant to your own over time, they also add fat to your body and make you tired and grouchy later on.


It is, however, important to choose carbohydrates that are good for you. These are classified as Low Glycemic Carbohydrates because simply put, if you don’t, there is an exceedingly unfavorable chance you will end up being one of the millions that are diagnosed with the all too commonly known disease ‘diabetes’.  This disease has had an astounding growth of 600% increase in just the last generation alone.  If you prize your health and not having to worry about shooting yourself with insulin or letting a disease control your day to day activity, then I strongly suggest, that you take note and and choose from my list of good carbs (below) each time you eat. Include fiber consistently.

Too Little Carbs…

 
If carbohydrate intake is completely restricted, your body will actually start to use its stored fat for energy (ketosis)… thus the popularity of the Atkins and other diets promoting little to no carbohydrate intake. But let’s face it, who can live a life without carbs?  Once you start to introduce the wrong kinds back into your diet, the weight comes on faster than it went off.  Eventually, by restricting your body from carbohydrate (energy) ketosis results and leaves an unhealthy amount of acids, as an acid residue, throughout your blood stream (ketoacidosis).  Who wants that?  


         Other side effects are:
  • Tiredness and fatigue          
  • Headache          
  • Prolonged Thirst          
  • Bad Breath          
  • Weakness          
  • Nausea and Stomach Ache          
  • Dizziness

The Halo Effect Can Hurt Your Diet

If organic foods top your shopping list, you’re probably not doing your waistline any favors. Why? Because when we believe something is “healthy” or “good for us,” we tend to put a positive spin on everything about that product – including the fat and sugar content. Psychologists call it the halo effect, and here’s how it hurts your diet:

Researchers at Cornell University asked volunteers to compare foods that were labeled either “regular” or “organic.” Each participant sampled chips, yogurt, and cookies. Then they answered a series of questions about each product. Here’s the catch: All of the items were organic – and they were all identical. They were just labeled differently to see if the names changed people’s responses. They did. EVERYONE said the products labeled “organic” tasted better. They also said that the samples they believed to be “organic” were lower in fat and higher in fiber. Of course, that led them to underestimate the number of calories in each sample. Here’s the scary part: Even though they were eating cookies and chips, most of the testers said they considered them healthy when they were labeled “organic.”
What’s the take-away from this? You can’t judge a food by its label.

If you want to be in control of your eating, your best bet is to read the entire list of ingredients, limit your calorie intake, and measure your portion sizes.

An athlete's requirement of nutrition differs from each individual.  It primarily depends on the body type and sort of sports an athlete competes in.   There is no particular macronutrient that can fulfill the requirements of every athlete.  Although there are definitely certain micronutrients that every athlete and high intensity competitor should consume regularly to prepare their body for exertion and proper cellular repair.

If you are considering any type of competitive sports or physically demanding activities, then you should determine what nourishing foods you ought to eat that will maximize your body for the training sessions ahead and help you to keep your mind sharp even after the grueling workouts.

Every sport requires the high levels of endurance, power from the body, as well as mental alertness.  If you are not eating the necessary nourishing food to sustain physical endurance, then you will not be fit to participate in the competition.  


For the absolute best performance possible, your body requires all the nutrients of a variety of foods in adequate amounts.  In the absence of these you cannot compete, or at least, the competitive arena will be much more fierce.

Another tip for proper sports nutrition to keep in mind is to eat protein rich food.  This will help to supply muscles with essential amino acids and also it is advisable to have the required carbohydrates so that your body can get adequate energy to perform the activities necessary for the sport.  Precisely, a sports drink with minerals that keep the ratio of electrolytes in your body is preferable.  Many high endurance athletes also prefer a pasta overload the day prior to competition.

Right Sports Nutrition For The Game Day~ 


Experts in sports nutrition suggest eating a meal about one hour before you run or compete.  It's necessary to include adequate carbohydrates to be sure your blood glucose levels are sufficient for sports competition because they require a great deal of staying power.  Glucose is the source that gives energy to muscle to perform the activity and keep your mind alert.  In the absence of glucose, you could faint during event because your mind cannot work properly. Dried berries, fruits and oatmeal help sustain energy.


So, in sports like running, bicycling and swimming you need, carbohydrates that can help your body generate the required energy to perform necessary actions continually.  Experts suggest to get enough carbohydrates for your body to draw upon during such endurance sports.


Nutritionists suggest eating 50 grams of carbohydrates every hour prior to the event start.  Bananas, oatmeal, energy bars and reduced fat milk are some of the instant source of carbohydrates.  Be sure to include recommended water with and after every meal.
